Not every photoshoot starts with a bang —literally— but this one kind of did. When I arrived at the Berkeley Humane studio to photograph Chip, a 6 (ish) year old chihuahua mix, the sounds of construction clatter filled the air. (Berkeley Humane is in the process of building a beautiful new space, yay for the future, but not so easy on little ears today!)
Chip started off a little quiet and reserved, which makes sense, really. Construction noise, unfamiliar surroundings, and some odd lady pointing a giant eyeball at him (hi, that’s me with my camera) aren’t exactly the most relaxing combo. But even in that uneasy space, he showed me a quiet kind of bravery that completely melted my heart.
Finding His Light
We took our time. I let him sniff the studio, settle into the space, and warm up to the situation. He didn’t strut like a supermodel, he soft-stepped into the moment. With a few snacks, and soft words, Chip warmed up very quickly. And then… he delivered. He gave me the head tilts. The soft blinks. The accidental bleps. Even a perfectly timed mlem. Chip is the kind of pup who feels things deeply. He listens to the room. He watches before diving in. And honestly, I love that energy. Sensitive dogs often give you these beautifully subtle moments, little shifts in expression, body language that tells a story, eyes that say everything.
And when you catch those in-camera? Pure magic.I mean look at the little headtilt!
Shoutout to Berkeley Humane (and the Future)
This shoot was at the Berkeley Humane studio, they are in the middle of a full-blown building glow-up. Despite the noise and chaos, they continue to show up for animals like Chip with love, patience, and squeaky toys. I can’t wait to see their new space when it’s finished, it’s going to be a game changer for the community.
