Meet Prince: The Blue-Eyed Passenger Princess Waiting for His Forever Ride

I recently spent time with Prince, a medium-sized pup with piercing blue eyes and an observant nature. He’s not your typical “jump-in-your-lap” kind of pup. Instead, he’s more of a “I’ll be nearby, watching the birds and pondering the mysteries of the universe” type, until he gets to know you.

Why Prince Stole My Heart (And Could Steal Yours Too)

Prince is actually a staff favorite at Rocket Dog Sanctuary. While we love all the dogs (obviously!), it’s hard not to have a soft spot for this beautiful and thoughtful guy. He’s been waiting a little longer than expected for his forever home, and honestly? We just think he hasn't met his people yet.

First, I brought Prince to K9 Optima for an evaluation, where he handled the new environment like a curious, but indifferent pro. A few days later, I met him again, this time with his favorite volunteer, Robyn, at the Emeryville Marina for his official photoshoot. That’s when his true personality really began to shine. When Prince is around someone he knows, he lights up: a goofy, sweet, alert boy who’s ready to take in the world, as long as he has someone steady by his side. During his session with Josh from K9 Optima, he explored the space, ignored us, and eventually settled down right in front of us. Josh pointed out something very important: Prince doesn’t really express himself in the way people expect. He’ll come up to you, sniff you, and accept attention. He even ate all the chicken and stayed for the butt scritches. However.. he doesn't ask for the attention, and when he’s had enough, he’ll quietly walk away. His body language is subtle, and sometimes misunderstood by people expecting all dogs to be exuberantly affectionate. Prince needs someone who’s willing to listen to what he’s really saying. Consent checks are important with every dog, but Prince would really appreciate them. A dog inspecting you and getting close doesn't automatically mean they want you all over them, and that's totally normal!

I Specialize in Working With Dogs Like Prince

Not every dog is super outgoing, focused, and camera-ready by default and that’s okay. Some pups are reserved, might have a little history, or a few quirks that make them extra special. I love working with these dogs, the indifferent ones, the shy ones, the slightly “extra” ones. The ones you have to work for. My photography approach is calm, pressure-free, and built around trust. I create a safe space where dogs can be themselves, even if that means meeting them several times before the actual shoot, or cutting a photoshoot short because the dog's comfort is always my top priority.

Whether your pup will lick the eye-balls of a stranger if given the chance, or is a bit of a gentler soul like Prince, I’m here to meet them where they are. You can read more here 👈🏼

What Helps Prince Thrive

If you think Prince might be the one for your family, here’s what makes a big difference for him:

  • Structured, Positive Interactions: Get his attention, ask for a sit, reward with treats. He thrives with predictability. And chicken, lots of chicken.. While he is very sweet, he hasn't quite made the connection yet that humans are super fun and often food dispensers.
  • Engaged Walks: Think “urban parkour” sniffing trees, hopping on benches, doing little tricks. He loves using his brain. No zoning out and doomscrolling on walkies please.
  • Gentle Transitions: Prince is very observant and might get a bit startled by sudden changes like strangers popping up out of nowhere, or fast sudden movement (but who doesn't though..) Totally normal, just give him time and help him navigate until he is truly settled.
  • A Chill Female Dog Friend: He doesn’t *need* another dog, but he does very well with happy, confident female dogs around. It brings out his best self!

You can find out more about him, or even better.. apply to adopt him on the rocket dog website.

Why I Love Photographing Dogs Like Him

Every dog has a story, and I love capturing the small moments that show who they really are. Prince may not be an in-your-face goofball all the time, but the connection he builds with his people? It’s deep and it's beautiful to see him open up like that in front of the camera.
