Returning Home with Rollie

Some places just hold a certain kind of magic, the kind you can feel in the air. For Rollie and his humans, that place was a small, quiet beach in Richmond, California. It’s where they used to live and spend time together, where the view of the bridge meets the calm of the water. So when it came time to celebrate Rollie’s life and capture their bond, there was no better place to return to.

While this was a Celebration of Life session, Rollie was still young, full of personality, and still had that spark of puppy wildness. No surprise since he is a pittie, husky mix! This session wasn’t about saying goodbye, it was about embracing who he is, right now, and revisiting a spot that feels like home.

The Session: Mud, Fog, and Big Hearts

The Bay Area can be unpredictable when it comes to weather, but honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about photographing here. The fog that morning was perfect, soft, moody, and flattering. I’m not a fan of harsh midday sun, and the fog added a dreamlike texture to the greens and browns of the beach and hills. Even the bridge in the background brought this cool, industrial contrast to the natural tones.

It was lower tide than we expected, which meant a lot of mud and algae, and Rollie loved it. He ran, sniffed, explored, and got sooo dirty, it was amazing. It was exactly what I hope for during these sessions: real, unfiltered happy moments that feel like them.

We started with a few “matching outfit” photos with his humans, then let Rollie take the lead. When he ran, they followed. When he stopped to sniff, they knelt down to kiss his head. The sweetest photos came from those simple interactions, not too much posing, just love.

Letting the Dog Lead

In every Celebration of Life session, I try to make it all about what brings the dog joy. Sometimes that’s running, sometimes it’s cuddling, sometimes it’s both. With Rollie, it was clear he wanted to move, explore, and feel the sand under his paws.

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to make everything look perfect, but the truth is, it already is. Muddy paws, wet noses, humans with dirty jeans, that’s what love looks like. These sessions are about connection and presence, not perfection. Al though let's be real, all of his photos are perfection.

Why Returning to a Meaningful Place Matters

Choosing a location that holds personal meaning adds so much depth to a session like this. For Rollie and his humans, this beach wasn’t just pretty, it was theirs. They’d walked these trails before, watched sunsets here, shared moments. Going back felt like a way to honor all of those memories while creating new ones.

Celebration of Life sessions don’t have to be somber. They can be full of laughter, movement, and chaos. They’re about celebrating the love that’s still here, the joy that still exists, and the connection that will never go away.

Looking Ahead

When I delivered the artwork, Rollie was absolutely thrilled, and his humans couldn’t stop smiling either. They had ordered not one but two large canvases. One of my favorites is a panoramic shot of them sitting on a bench and Rollie in the middle, grinning like a total ham, the bridge in the background. His dad even joked that it almost looks like an ad. Seeing that moment come to life on canvas was a beautiful, full-circle experience. Now these pieces will live in their home, a lasting reminder of a dog who fills every space he enters with joy.

Thinking About a Celebration of Life Session?

If you’re considering a Celebration of Life photoshoot for your dog, my advice is simple: choose a place that means something to you. Let your dog lead, don’t worry about dirt or weather, and just be present.

These sessions are not about loss, they’re about love, and the beautiful, messy, fleeting moments that make it all worth remembering.
